Ho, my first post

Tag: UncategorizedMehdi Abaakouk @ 4:11 pm

This is my first blog, I will try to talk about my interest for the open-source universe, the listen-project, and all things which have something to do here.

First, the listen-project. When I connect on the listen website what do I see? Last update 13/02/2007…, this is why I have started this blog. The project is not dead, I carry on working on it when I have time.

To end listen 0.6, I need:
- to finish port of ipod support to the new plugins structure (big todo )
- to remove gnomevfs (to remove gnome dependencies, for xfce, openbox user, …)
- to use ctype to directly use libmozebmed.so instead of python-gtkmozembed (because it is only provided by gnome)

Well, when these 3 points and all important bugs will be fixed, then listen 0.6 will be released.

Next, I have started an other small project, gmixer.
Its goals is to offer the same functionalities than the gnome mixer, only in gtk/gstreamer, without gnome dependencies.

No tarball is already available, but you can grab it from subversion here

    That’s great…

  3. mauricio says:

BTW, i was looking for an Listen Player IRC channel in ubuntu-irc, could not find anything about….

  4. mauricio says:

how much it takes to find a reply here?

  5. mauricio says:

a weeks ago i wrote this to theli48 in gmail, i never got a reply….

I just saw your email in the About window in Listen Player.
Then i would like to share with you (if you have some time) this muzik passion that me and you have. For a long time i was a user who loved amarok and there hasn’t any place for another player in my world :D
I had Kubuntu installed in my PC, but, when KDE 4 was released it didn’t work fine for me, so i tried Ubuntu, and then inmediatelly begin to find a great player to feel my muzik here in Ubuntu (gnome), so i searched the WWW and found some players like Exile, Listen, Rythmbox, and others. I tried everyone and at the end Listen was my choice.

So i would like to help this project sending you my point of view of some things about this player.

    1. First of all, Amazon is not working at all, not even in Amarok, there is a change in the Amazon server i think.
    2. I would like to see mi Covers a little bigger, 200 to 300 Pixels maybe.
    3. I would like to change the Album name of a group of songs all togheter, at this moment is very sad and takes a lot of time to have to do that track by track, isn’t it?
    4. I would like to have a list of Web Radios to play, and to have to add one by one to the player. Amarok have a very long list of Radio Stations to choose.
    5. I would like to listen LastFm radios in the player too.
    6. Something i think is very amazing in Amarok is the posibility of doing FadeIn FadeOut between tracks and when you close or open Amarok, it fadeout and fadein, this is really beautifull and is very smooth for the ears.

This is it for this moment.

I would be very happy to get a replay from you, i hope this is going to happen.

    Bye.

    Great job you are donne.
    Thank you….

Great to see that this is still alive!
I absolutely love Listen, and it’s been by far my most used audio player for the past year.

Let’s see - maybe I can think of some things to bug you with…

I was really suprised with the new Rhythmbox - the biggest improvements was stuff that Listen already has, but I liked that it has browseable radio stations - it would be nice to have a list of radio stations that are in there by default.

Also Magnatune and Jamendo support - I did not know what it was until recently, but I like the idea. I understand that this is probably not a small thing to realize, but it would be awesome.

It would be nice if all songs that I play would get scrobbled and not just the ones in my playlist. - I have a messy folder with new media, and a somewhat tidy MP3 folder, and I irregularly take my time to copy the new stuff over and put it where it belongs, so a lot of the music I play is not actually in my Library.

I like the Context menu, but I would like to be able to make my own - I have less than 100 albums that I really care for, but I have more than 1000 in my album list, some due to bad taggin, some because I just have one song of that album.
If I could put together a list of my actual favorite albums, that would be great - like a playlist, just with albums. - Like the ‘Context’ tab - just customizable.

    That’s about it, I think. :)
    Keep up the good work!

mauricio > Except point 4, i have already implemented all your points in next version of listen ;)

    hey bro, how’s it going?

i just found this player and i gotta say… i love it… sure, there are still things that can be improved, but right now? it pretty much rocks… i used to love Amarok too (just like Mauricio) but then i moved to gnome (just like Mauricio too… lol) so i started looking for other players… found urs and i love it… it’s by far the most user-friendly combined w/usability.

everything everybody posted i agree with… covers aren’t really working, but it’s cool… one usually wants to hear music… not watch it… lol

now i read someone had some problems w/tagging… i recommend easyTAG (http://easytag.sourceforge.net/) it’s a really cool program and u can edit both ur tags and ur filenames… (u can use this until the tagging part in Listen is done… ^^)

next i’d like to ask a question… some music that i have has really unusual lyrics… u see i’m a christian and some lyrics can’t be found.. that’s an awesome add-on to Listen, but i was wondering if one can edit the available servers to look up lyrics? if u can, tell me how and i’ll put up a list of several servers, mail it to u and u can prolly add it to the software =)

now i’m not a programmer but i can learn… so if ya need any help prolly i can do something bout it… have vacations coming soon so hit me up if ya like…

oh yeah, almost forgot… i was wondering also if u could add somehow an option to customize the colors of the playlist… i’ve found that white can wear ur eyes tired really fast and i’m using the compiz add-on negative to make it easier on my eyes… but i’d like to know if there’s a way of changing that… if i can, i’ll help out w/that too…

alrite… nothing else left to say but: thnx for Listen… it really saved my music experience in linux… ^^

  9. herrbua says:

oh yeah, btw… my email is: kellner.kurt@gmail.com

u prolly have it on the server list, but still… just in case… ^^

and also if someone feels like supporting this project… and u don’t know much bout programming… we could try to do something together or something… ^^ open to suggestions…

i love listen!! in no other player have i found this paricular way of playlist window and lyrics accesibility!!

but, i have found some problems…
with the ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron the seek bar was not working for me so i switched back to 7.10 (some packages cause the problem cuz in 7.10 also with some upgrades i had the same problem so i was forced to do a downgrade of some packages :P)…

and sometimes it gets buggy and it doesnt see any of my songs… i click import folder, or set a folder for my library but nothing…

    Listen rocks.

    It absolutely rocks.

    ROCKS!

Thanks for creating such a fine music player!

    Can’t wait for 0.6 :D

Hello. I’m glad to see the project is this alive.

Keep up the good work. I’ve switched to Listen and will stay if there’s something going on. ;)

I think there should a place where we could tell you what we would like to see in the player.

  13. mghambunan says:

Thanks for creating this wonderful music player.

I just want to know if there are options for crossfading in Listen.

  14. thewolf32 says:

Hi again, I have a few suggestions for the next version :)

    1) Please, add a few more lyrics servers, the 2 that are currently there usually don’t work well, sometimes it shows me lyrics that aren’t the ones of my songs. Maybe I can change something in the config file to fix this?
    2) Listen takes a bit of time to startup, maybe in the next version you could tweak it to optimize the startup process, would be nice :)
    3) Maybe there could be an option to have plugins, like other music players have.
    4) A covers manager, so that we can easily manage our album covers, and maybe from there download them all at once.
    5) A Resume Playback, so that when we close Listen, when we open it again it will continue the song that we were listening before closing it.
    6) Improve the tag editor, it won’t work with my songs :(
    7) A mini-mode, like many other music players have.

I think this is all :)

Do you have an aprox. date when Listen 0.6 will be released?

    Keep up the great work.

Btw, do you have PayPal? I’ll give you a donation when I can.

  15. bwyan says:

I agree with everyone else here. This is by far the best player I’ve tried on my Ubuntu box yet.

My only suggestion for a new version is an Equalizer. I really love to be able to tweak my sound and would be thankful if it would find its way into the next version og Listen.

    Keep up the good work.

Plz no bug report here, go to trac and fill a ticket [http://www.listen-project.org/newticket]

  17. http://error403forbidden.blogspot.com/ says:

i found it a bit wrong myself, but it says TICKET_CREATE privileges are required to perform this operation..
i havent used before any trac, ticket thing etc..

  18. http://error403forbidden.blogspot.com/ says:

btw, i got listen running ok by building the trunk version…

sorry the wrong comments here again, keep up the good work

  19. http://error403forbidden.blogspot.com/ says:

one recommendation that i just thought of while messing around with winamp….

if you could, make a choice for those who want. When you double click one song from one album to get the whole album in the playlist (after cleaning it up) and automatically get the song the user selected playing…

for example, when i select the 5th song of the album, the whole album gets in the playlist and automatically the 5th song is playing
